It used to be more than a meeting place for worhsip it was a meeting place for planning the next move by our people. Sunday morning was a powerful time in The Old Black Church. Educate the people on who is best suite for the job it can be done from the pulpit. Talk about the issues, encourage members to act in such a way that the status quo changes and go from there. I'd love to see some of these mega churches launching teen mentoring programs in tough neighborhoods. I'd love to see them have neighborhood cleanup days where they go to neighborhoods that aren't their own and pick up trash. Volunteer at a homeless shelter...something! Even have forums to register voters and educated voters about what candidates positions are, but engaging in the partisan political wrangling that goes on actually seems against spiritual principles.Liz Dwyerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17794296990587989214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2842906968815125638.post-11558972372138112922008-01-07T10:47:00.000-08:002008-01-07T10:47:00.000-08:00The church has always been in the political game s...The church has always been in the political game since the beginning of organized religion. I see no reason why they shouldn't continue to participate.

The challenge is the fact that "moral" authority is a slippery slope and intolerance rules the day in many churches.

With so much corruption and scandal going on both in the political and theological arena, both groups should be watched closely by the public.

After all, like all of us, they are human and fallible.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2842906968815125638.post-69229059469381413162008-01-07T09:21:00.000-08:002008-01-07T09:21:00.000-08:00I would settle for them just being active within a...I would settle for them just being active within a square mile of there buildings. Sometimes they are referred to as 501(c)(3)tax exempt organizations, but that can vary as well.

There are specific prohibitions against these types of organizations engaging in lobbying or political activity or they may lose their tax-exempt status by the IRS. Here are some links for some more information.

http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=155030,00.html

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1828.pdf

In general, if any church wants to keep its tax-exempt status, it must be extraordinarily careful about getting involved in politics.Lisa Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08096947438461486505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2842906968815125638.post-78760163603652611722008-01-07T07:07:00.000-08:002008-01-07T07:07:00.000-08:00I think they should make a political stance. all c...I think they should make a political stance. all churches have had some type of influence on politics going back to the birth of the Catholics.

Today though they have to be smarter though.
