This was a really amazing week for women's sports! All around the globe women were competing and excelling!
In a world where the media is only too happy to acknowledge everything they deem wrong with Black women, spouting every negative statistic they can, it's a pleasure to acknowledge Black womens triumphs as well!
In Osaka, Japan at the 2007 World Track and Field Championships the women were the true stars. Allyson Felix of the United States shocked the track and field world. In her specialty event the 200 meters she ran the fastest time since 1998, easily defeating this years 100 meter world champion Veronica Campbell. Allyson went on to win two more gold medals, in the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay.
Also at Osaka, Meseret Defar of Ethiopia continued her dominance in the 5000 meters. Born in Ethiopia, Maryum Yusef now of Bahrain showed why people expect her to become the premier 1500m runner in the world, winning the gold medal in the event.
At this years U.S. Open tennis championships in Queens, N.Y Serena Williams seems to be back to form advancing to the quarter finals. And little know newcomer Ahsha Rolle advanced before losing to the 15Th ranked player in the world. Also like her little sister, Venus Williams advanced.
And if that were not enough action, the WNBA Conference Championships began this week. Cappie Pondexter of the Phoenix Mercury was the star, winning the first game by making two free throws with just 2.1 seconds left. Then in the second game of the three game western conference finals she lead all scorers with 22, propelling the Mercury by the San Antonio Silver stars in a sweep. The other series matches Swin Cash and the Detroit Shock against the Indiana Fever. The Fever took game one but lost game two earlier this afternoon in the eastern conference finals. Their next game is tomorrow at 6 P.M. eastern. Look for the winner to meet the Mercury Wednesday night to decide who is to be the 2007 WNBA champion.
