Beyoncé, Ciara and Rihanna are all just following in Aaliyah's footsteps. Unfortunately for them her footprints are too filled with talent for them to follow. I like Ciara and Rihanna, they just aren't Aaliyah.
People of an older generation talk about remembering where they were and what they were doing when JFK was killed. I remember vividly what I was doing on a warm summer night in August of 2001 when I heard a radio report of Aaliyah's death. I was completely in shock.
I wasn't just a casual Aaliyah fan. I was really into her music and her burgeoning acting career. I became a fan in 1996 with the song One In A Million and have remained one every since.
I wonder what she would be doing now, how many awards would she have won.
This video and song Try Again, released in 2000, is classic Aaliyah. I loved her style and this video shows why she is to many people an icon of style and talent.
Enjoy!

I still miss Aaliyah...RIP
I, too, LOVED Aaliyah.
She had such a loving spirit about her. Her music and style were very unique and I thought she was rather classy and not so "flaunt-it-in-your-face."
I think that Ciara truly emulates Aaliyah...
Beyonce is in a league of her own...I think Rihanna emulates Beyonce.
Randi,
I miss her too. What a loss.
Sage,
That's what I liked about Aaliyah, she had class.
MDC,
Thank you! I thought I was the only one that felt that way. I always she Beyonce as getting her money and fame. It makes me so sad, because she should not be gone.
Professor Tracey,
Exactly, Aaliyah set the stage for a lot of the success that Beyonce is having.
Thanks Mes Deux! Now I am a confessed Beyonce fan, much to the chagrin of some of you! However, I was FIRST an Aaliyah fan!
I miss her so much!! I try to explain to my teenage daughter who looooves Ciara, that although Ciara is talented, she is most definitely basking in the short success of Aaliyah!
Janie,
Tell your daughter to watch some of Aaliyah's vid's on You Tube and she'll see her influence on Ciara.
And we'll skip the subject of Beyonce. (lol)
