WASHINGTON (AFP) — The three main minorities in the United States -- blacks, Hispanics and Asians -- have little trust for each other and hold prejudiced views about Americans of different ethnic origins to their own, a poll showed Wednesday.
"This extraordinary poll reveals some unflattering realities that exist in America today," said Sandy Close, head of new America Media (NAM) which sponsored the poll together with ethnic media groups.
Forty-four percent of Hispanics and 47 percent of Asians are "afraid of African-Americans because they are responsible for most of the crime," the survey of 1,105 adults drawn from the three ethnic groups showed.
More than half of black Americans polled and 46 percent of Hispanics said Asian business owners do not treat them with respect.
And half of African-Americans said Latin American immigrants "are taking jobs, housing and political power away from the black community."
Hispanics and Asians, whose populations are made up mainly of immigrants, were positive about the American dream, saying that those who work hard in the United States reap the rewards of their toil.
In contrast, more than 60 percent of African-Americans dismissed the American dream as not working for them.
All three ethnic groups viewed white Americans in a more favorable light than they did members of another minority.
Sixty-one percent of Hispanics, 54 percent of Asians and 47 percent of African-Americans said they would rather do business with whites than members of the other two groups.
"The poll reaffirms that while race relations between ethnic groups and whites grab the headlines, there are also serious racial problems between minority groups in America," said Sergio Bendixen, an expert on Hispanic and multilingual polling.
"Blacks feel they are left out of the American Dream and are being displaced by newcomers, and each group buys into the negative stereotypes about the other two," he said.
The three minority groups did agree that the United States would be a better place if blacks, Asians and Hispanics held more authoritative positions at universities, in business, media and government.

They also said they believe racial tensions in the United States will ease over the next 10 years.
Does any of this surprise you?

no, i'm not b/c these two visible minorities will say whatever's clever to get in the good graces of the WASPs.
what's up with me commenting on like four of your posts today?!?!
btw, hope you enjoy infidel. the mr.'s been reading it for.ever. he says there are incidences that cause him to put it down. hopefully i'll get my hands on his copy soon.
I always enjoy "official" reports that come out and merely regurgitate what folks on the ground had known for years. No News Flash here people.
Yawn...
ok, so am i mad at what the hispanics and asians feel toward blacks?
NO
the truth us the light....and furthermore, who would respect someone who doesn't respect themselves? well, the shameful part of this that some upstanding blacks are being lumped into the populations of low-life scumbuckets, ones that aren't criminals, ones that are about their business and families. but what does america see more of? so there you have it. to keep it all the way funky, i'm scared of some blacks too (depending on where i am and what's going on)!
about the "fact" that hispanics and asians are "taking" opportunities away from blacks, i disagree. see, the things about those groups is they look to this country and life that it has to offer as a new beginning, new lives in store. hence the reason they will grind themselves out for low pay and no benefits. they save, they conserve their dollars and they in turn CAN around and own half of your black block cuz the blacks who have lived there for 35 years never did. so if blacks are mad, be mad enough to elevate, own, diversify, teach, read, and uplift YOURSELF.
what does that sound like? i'm mad at you for making the choices you made that benefited you and your family while i did....hmmmmmmmmm, none of the above. when you think about it its simplest firms, that's on some hater tip. americans PERIOD should be ashamed of themselves for NOT taking FULL advantage of the opportunities that are afforded them once BORN in this country. so why be mad at the bottom-feeders that IMMIGRATE here, snatch your scraps & crumbs and switch the game on you, leaving you a bottom-feeder.
why do AA's think the dream is eluding them? (well, i won't generalize here...but) i have yet to see many AA's personally sweat blood and tears the way other minorities do to upgrade themselves. and when the slightest amount of "success" is achieved, the compensation that IS earned is wasted away on foolishness.
TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS REQUIRED...so you are given america, land of opportunity as your stomping grounds...now it is required of you to study and invest in the paths that will afford you the best life possible. too many people (i've known) want something for nothing...all the benefits with no work. what's wrong with this picture?
on a personal note, i know a high school junior who needs SERIOUS guidance about furthering his education and the college application process. his mother asked me to assist him. i gave him my number 5 months ago. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM YET AND IT IS DECEMBER. (anyone who has gone to college knows you don't wait until the last minute, plus there are other factors like community service and extracurricular activities you need to begin if you haven't already so you can include them on your app. these things take time!) oh, but 2 months ago, he shamefully asked his mother to ask me where a certain store is located in the SoHo area that i frequent because he wanted some hot jeans.
'nuff said
Not surprising, MDC. First, though people of color are victims of mainstream racism, we also absorb mainstream views about ourselves and other minority groups. Second, I think some amount of separating by group, of looking down on others, of tribalism, is an ugly side of human nature. If we all looked the same and had the same culture, we'd find a way to create an "us" vs. "them."
I'm gonna quote my grandmother: "We are ALL God's children." :-)
Browngirl,
(lol) I'm very happy that you did comment on my post(s) today!
Infidel is a bit of a rough read but I've been wanting to read it for a long time. I found it at the flea market for just $12. I think I could have gotten it cheaper but the vender was an older Black lady and I didn't want to haggle with her. (lol)
Danielle,
That's true most of it was no surprise but still a bit disconcerting, especially the part about minorities being more willing to shop with Whites than each other. That's a real shame.
The Addict,
I think that you make a great point about how we are lumped together as one group.
Middle class African Americans are almost invisible in the media.
And amongst the under-class there is a pervasive feeling that underachieving is okay. Like in the example of the kid who hasn't called you, he probably thinks it's cool to stumble rather than excel. He'll pay dearly for it later.
It's too bad though that we minorities don't realize how much we have in common. It's also too bad that other minorities don't appreciate that the Rights that they enjoy are from the hard work and suffering of our not too distant ancestors.
Tami,
I agree with your statement and as usual I'd like to know who the sample groups were. Were they college educated, Poor, Middle class? I think you might see differing opinions from the more educated.
Randi,
Very true. I hope more people keep that in mind.
