I found a very interesting post at the blog
The Sowing Circle about love and caring in African America. I think Tasha makes very insightful points so I thought I would share a portion of her post.
"The lack of love amongst black folk manifests itself in many different ways. People who love each other don’t ignore a woman’s screams for three hours while she and her son are being raped and tortured. People who love each other don’t respond “A woman was raped, so what?” when asked about the incident. Men who love their wives and girlfriends don’t shoot them dead and throw their bodies on the side of the road like trash; or set them on fire; or shoot them in the head, permanently disfiguring them. Women who love their children don’t continue to leave them with drug-addicted and abusive boyfriends to be raped and murdered.
People who love each other don’t continue to support executives and entertainers who make millions by continuing to perpetuate the gangsta/pimp/ho mentality that rips at the fabric of our culture. Leaders who truly love their people don’t use painful events in individuals’ lives to catapult themselves to national fame. Leaders who love their people don't use a young woman’s rape and torture to bring more attention to themselves than to the victim of the crime. Where is the love?

What do you think of Tasha's assertions?

I agree with her we don't love any more. Our people once cared about what happen to women and children. I don't know when we stop.
Agreed. Too many of us have no love for each other, no self respect, and no sense of accountability. In the case of Dunbar Village, I tried to imagine myself in the neighbors' shoes, but I couldn't imagine any circumstances that would have kept me from dialing 911 or something. Yet, I'm sure I've failed my fellow man at some point (someone stranded on the side of the road, a homeless beggar, etc).
JJ B,
I'm not sure either. I think it has been a slow process that's been going on for a long time.

Nicole,
I couldn't image not calling either. I think in order to ignore cries for help like that people must have been really damaged.
