The terrible journalism of corporate media has forced me to seek out new and better sources of news.
I have come to depend on NPR (National Public Radio) for good unbiased news coverage. I listen to NPR on a daily basis and am rarely disappointed.
I have also found several good online news resources, such as the BBC. There are also many independent media outlets online. It's nice to know that even though corporate media dominates there are great alternatives.
Finally the place that I look for great commentary and opinion is not The New York Times but blogs. I have found great and insightful commentary on current events on blogs. In fact I would go so far as to say the commentary on many of my favorite blogs is much better than that of commercial media.
When I hear of a big news story and I want insight I go directly to blogs. The CNN's of the world are now just a distant bad memory.
Go Blogs!
Where do you get most of your news and opinion?
Do you rely on corporate media for news and information?

I've been listening to npr for years. They are probably the only News outlet that I trust to at least make an attempt at being objective, which is probably why the far right tried to defund them so aggressively.
From Blogs like yours JustJudithSays, Kayoz and more. Even if one of you do not report it verbatim, you still give as much insight as you can. It helps if not more to see it from the eye of one how I can relate to as opposed to one who may never relate to me - in any way
I love blogs and independent sources. I've become so disgusted with traditional media and the "news" it provides.
It's depressing because, as a reporter, I'm literally watching the business I love deteriorate before my own eyes.
Is still watch CNN and MSNBC, but I find that lately I've been going to the blogosphere for my news. I love reading the different perspectives and interacting with other individuals who have the same concerns. I realized a long time ago not to depend on the mainstream media for the truth bout what's going on.
TV news is nothing more than a form of entertainment for me. I shake my head and some of the things that pass as responsible journalism. And when they know it won't even pass, they call it commentary.
I love reading blogs and I'm really getting into non-US newspapers.
I been a hot mess lately and haven't given the news much attention lately. But I agree BBC and NPR are the best news sources. I want to give them my attention.
But I still check CNN and Yahoo. I know they suck.
Me and u both, i go to the blogs to or Iamotto
I've learned more from blogs and Democracy Now than I've ever learned from MSM. I tune MSM out because it's garbage and a whole bunch of nothing being fed to all of us.
It offers no room for critical thought because it's too busy telling us what to think.
Thank goodness for the blogosphere and Democracy Now. I'll start checking out NPR as well.
I love NPR and read a lot of blogs for news too. But I also make my rounds online to CNN, Yahoo, Boston.com, NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Miami Herald, etc. I try to read all over the country and see how different papers report the same stories. I also like reading international sources and seeing how US news is reported there.
One problem I've noticed though is sometimes it seems like it's a different newspaper, but they're actually owned by the same parent company, so I have to wonder. Sometimes they will even repeat the exact same stories. NY Times owns Boston.com and I think is affiliated with the International Herald Tribune.
I also feel that blogs tend to have more insightful and intelligent opinions.
Aside from blogs, I hit up the BBC and C-SPAN. I'll make a mental note to check out NPR more often. I also visit BlackReport.com pretty frequently.
I love NPR, but I have come to love Democracy Now with Amy Goodman a little more. About 6-7 years ago NPR/PBS began accepting "underwriting" for major sponsers that advertise on "commercial" TV and I have noticed a change. The blogsphere has really opened my eyes the most, like the information you put down here, excellent.
Okay, I think I lost my previous two comments. Let's try again...
I am a big media junkie, so that is how I stay informed. I love NPR and listen daily. I also listen to talk radio, read my local paper and The New York Times, visit Slate, Salon, Huffington Post, Politico, The Nation and about a zillion blogs. I also subscribe to monthlies like The Nation, Bitch, Bust, National Geographic and Newsweek.
I think the key to staying informed is consuming a quantity of quality media.
I really appreciate the work of my fellow bloggers, especially in the black blogosphere. There are so many really sharp and unique voices that you don't hear in mainstream media.
Because blog are not held to journalistic standards, I feel like it is important to keep some mainstream fare in my media "diet," by I am really picky about it. And I really appreciate pubs like The Nation that do not serve corporate masters.
I'm with you, Mes. I have came across a lot of educational and informative post since I've been doing the Blog Thang. Your blog is one that I would rank high among the list. Every now and then I still watch a little CNN, but not as much as I blog.
I was so embarrassed to say I read more blogs for news than MSM news. but after seeing alot of the comments here, I don't feel so left out! lol
Sometimes yahoo news will catch my eye and i'll read but, I don't go to it purposefully to get news.
BTW --MDC, tag, you are it! Please see my blog for details. (Thank you.)
democracy now is what I listen to. I don't trust NPR (due to their Corporate sponsors) nor BBC (it's just CNN with a British accent), don't believe the hype.
When I'm looking for breaking news, CNN and MSNBC are the cable channels or websites that I'm turn to. But if I'm looking for a full story that I can rely on and believe is true, NPR is king. They seem to give more sides to a story than most.
The BBC is also good because they will give a foreign view to a story that is sometimes different from the American MSM view.
I try to read Aljazeera.net but I'm still trying to form an opinion about them.
I only wish I could speak another language well enough to read or listen to other world opinions which maybe just as important or inciteful.
HC,
I remember when the conservatives tried to change NPR. They even managed to get one of their cronies on the board.

Anali,
Yeah media consolidation is a constant problem. Before you know it there will be only two media companies that own everything.

Anon,
I don't agree about the BBC. There are certain programs that are really good. Their African broadcasts are very good.

Curious,
Al-Jazeera has an English language TV station now. I wonder what that's like.

MDC,
Al-Jazeera does have an English language channel, but you have to see it Europe though. They may show it in Canada but I'm not sure. Also it's either banned in the US or they feel there is no market for it here.
I was referring to one of their websites which is in English.
Yes, I listen to Pacifica Radio, KPFK!! :-)
