From what I've read originally the watch maker Swatch was involved in the design of the car, but at some point Swatch backed out. The name is actually an acronym for Swatch Mercedes Art.
The smart car is just 94 inches long. So you can park it virtually anywhere. My only concern is with so many ridiculously large SUV's on the road, is it safe? The car is supposed to use a special cage to protect the occupants, but I will have to do more research, nothing trumps safety as far cars are concerned to me.
I guess my next step is to try to test drive one. I'm not sure how difficult that will be since they aren't on sale yet.
I'm really getting a little tired of taking the bus everywhere. Which is why I'm car shopping. I feel like I'm always on someone else's schedule. Also for some crazy reason my local public transportation company bought a zillion European buses from a company called Van Hool. The public transportation agency is always going on about how great they are and the people who actually have to take them every day hate them, me included. One reason is the seats all face each other. There is nothing more fun than spending your morning commute with some guy staring at you for the entire ride. Yikes! Also the back doors only work when they want to, so I've missed my stop quite a few times. Anyway enough about those crazy buses.
The only other car I'm really considering is the Volvo C30. It's a little hatchback. This is it's first year on the road. I don't know much about them except they are cute too and well it's a Volvo, so I figure it's safe. Except that Ford now owns Volvo, which is a little like the devil owning a church considering Ford's abysmal safety record.
So I'm going to continue my research, I'm sure I'll be posting more about my car search.

The Smart Car is very cute. I am in the process of downsizing from a big ol SUV (although I haven't found a great alternative with six kids?!) I have however become a little petrified of driving under huge cars and wonder about the safety. Good luck!
Wow 6! That's great. Well Volvo has wagons, I'm pretty sure they can hold six kids and they are safe cars.
