And when I 'm not "feeling" a particular blog I usually see at least one post that looks interesting. So I settle in and read the post and if the post is good then I might check out the comments.
Sometimes though when I click to open the comment form I find myself wading into a bunch of craziness. Have you ever read through the comments section on a blog and thought, what the ____! I have seen the craziest stuff in comments sections.
Honestly some people should forget the posts on their blog and just post the comments. I've seen amazing arguments. I've seen people trying to get their "rap" on, which is really crazy. I've seen boyfriends warning men to watch their comments on their girlfriend's blog. No kidding. I've seen people promoting their Cd's. All sorts of crazy stuff.
And none of that compares to the crazy racist comments I've seen. I mean what do racists do; just lurk around the blogisphere all day looking for a chance to make a racist comment?
And if you think racist comments on blogs are bad, check the comments on mainstream media sites. Oh my! The racists really hit full stride on those sites.
Have you ever heard the saying "follow a dumb kid home and you'll find a dumb parent"? Well that may be true with kids but it's not always true with commenters.
Just last night I went to one of my favorite blogs and decided to read the comments on a post. There was only one comment and it was nothing out of the ordinary. Anyway I decided to check out that persons blog. OMG! I felt like I accidentally walked into a Klan meeting!
By the way for those of you who think that some White people don't sit around watching Maury Povich and thinking all Black people are like that, you should have seen the post this person wrote about Black people who appear on that show. It was eye opening.
But the weirdest comments by far come from "anonymous" commenters. No offense to Anonymous commenters in general, I mean I hate to stereotype all anonymous commenters, but; Why are anonymous bloggers always (ahem) usually contrarians? They USUALLY have some oddball thing to say that goes totally against the flow of the other comments.
Again, no offense intended to the Anonymous commenters who may read this. I'm sure you're not like that. (cough)
But seriously I'm not knocking the anonymous commenters on my blog, they have been really nice. A couple have even given me some great information.
I suppose that bloggers set the tone of their comments by how they respond to comments. So maybe it all can't be blamed on the commenters. But what ever the cause people really need to get a hold of themselves. Very rarely is the comments conversation even that serious.
Comment arguments usually start over something really inane. Like one person makes a comment about some celebrity which offends someone else and, ding, ding, the fight is on.
When ever I find myself in one of these crazy comments sections, no matter how much I want to comment on the post, I usually just slowly back the heck out of there. I'm afraid if I leave a comment some of the crazy commenters might follow me back to my blog!

I never got the concept of comment beef (heh!). I see it more on the gossip sites though.
For me, it's not that serious and it never will be that serious. Who the hell has time to comment, go back and check the comments to see if anyone has beef with what they said and then respond?
I'm sorry, I have a full-time job and 16 units.
Afrodite,
That's where I see them too, on gossip sites. They are pretty funny.
I never really thought about that but I guess they would have to keep going back to continue the arguement. (lol)
As a relatively new blogger, I welcome all comments on my site--crazy or otherwise (lol).
Seriously, I know what you mean. I read Salon.com quite a bit and I now know which topics are going to bring out the crazy: Basically anything related to race, feminism and weight. I think we'd be surprised at who some of the comment bullies are. I think being anonymous on the Web gives people a power they don't feel in the real world.
Perhaps, I should enable the moderator comment like you to avoid crazy comments...hmmm...
If you want to see CRAZY comments, go to YouTube. I have seen videos that are non-controversial get comments from racists and foul mouth individuals. It is wild the type of people who comment on YouTube as if it is the weirdness capital of the internet.
Tami,
(lol) I still feel that way some days.
It's amazing, every time I read an article online that has to do with race I see incredibly racist comments. Racism is always just bubbling under the surface.
And I agree we would be surprised!
Sage,
I would be afraid to not have comment moderation! (lol)
Anonymous commentators do tend to be a bit odd. I think people being able to say whatever without having to stand in front of someone and look them in the eye creates a weird dynamic online.
@ MDC: I still have the option to go back and delete their comments, which I've had to do...LOL.
Liz,
That's true, anonymity makes some people brave. (lol)
Ehav,
The comments on You Tube are CRAZY! Where do those people come from? They are the most ignorant people on the internet!
Hey MDC,
I don't know where some of the people come from. I don't know if there is a country full of the strange and foul mouthed rejects of the world, and their only form of recreation is turning everything on You Tube in a racist, profanity filled, argument, etc. There are times I read some of the comments and I am in shock on why people choose to leave the comments if they feel as strongly as they do.
Maybe the fact that we don't understands means we're normal. As a poster I had on my wall in college used to say. You're not going crazy. Your going sane in a crazy world.
Wow, I have been placed on Blast.
I really didn't mean anything by the comment I made other than to offer a physical compliment. I can understand where the bf was coming from in his reply but I hate that he took it personal.
Again, I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I saw his comment saying I was disrepectful ... so I just accepted it, gave up reading the intelligent blog it was...and never thought anything about it.
Ehav,
You're right, it's a good thing we don't understand.
I'm going to have to remember that;"You're not going crazy. Your going sane in a crazy world." I need to put that on my wall.
Don,
Nobody would have known what I was talking about! (lol) I just thought it was interesting, I didn't say I thought you did anything wrong.
Thanks, Mes.
