Sports Friday: Allyson Wins....Detroit Falls

American sprinter Allyson Felix (top photo, number 960) sprinted to an amazing victory Friday at Osaka, Japan. In the 2007 Track and Field World Championships 200 meter final Allyson ran one of the fastest times in history, covering 200 meters in just 21.81 seconds. Ms Felix defeated 2007 100 Meter world champion Veronica Cambell who placed second in 22.34. Susanthika Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka took third in 22.63 seconds.

In game one of the WNBA Eastern Conference Championship tonight the Indiana fever defeated the 2006 WNBA World Champion Detroit Shock 75 to 65. Tamika Catchings (bottom photo, left) scored 22 points to lead her team to victory. The two teams meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. eastern from Detroit for game two of the three game series. Watch the game live on ABC or listen live via WNBA radio.

Also don't miss game two of the Western Conference Finals tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. eastern from Phoenix as the San Antonio Silver Stars take on the Mercury. The game will be broadcast on WNBA radio.

Why Keyshia, Why?

Nothing it appears puts the kibosh on standards like the prospect of earning big bucks. That seems to be the case as recently R&B singer Keyshia Cole (above) announced to MTV news that she would be going on tour in October with Robert Kelly, professionally known as RKelly.

Mr Kelly is currently under indictment on 21 counts of child pornography and his trial is set to begin September 21 (five and a half years after the original indictment). He has denied having tour plans for October.

So here is my problem, why would Keyshia Cole not only consider going on tour with RKelly, but agree to do so? I had become a fan of Keyshia Cole after the release of her debut album 'The Way It Is'. I love her soulful voice, filled with what can only be described as anguish and pain. I even purchased her entire album, something I rarely do in the download era. But now what? I can't support anyone that would collaborate with RKelly in any way. One of the reasons I have lost all respect for the once storied NAACP is that the organization gave an image award to RKelly, two years after he had been charged.

So Keyshia Cole comes off all my play lists and I won't support her by purchasing her music ever again. But it's just painful that a woman would throw pride and common sense out the window for a few bits of gold. Of course Keyshia Cole is not the only one to do business with RKelly, BET/ Viacom even dedicated an entire day to him recently on the release of his latest album. And cable outlet IFC announced also recently that it would be airing a film by him. But those are big companies that I expect nothing from. I expected more from Ms Cole.

2007 WNBA Western Conference Finals...WOW!

The Phoenix Mercury win game one of the WNBA Western Conference Finals at San Antonio in a contest that was decided during the very last seconds of the game. With under five seconds and the Mercury up 100 to 97, the San Antonio Silver Stars tied the game with an exciting 3 point shot. Then as Phoenix brought the ball in bounds Cappie Pondexter (pictured above) of the Mercury was fouled with 2.1 seconds on the clock. The Phoenix Mercury guard made both free throws putting the Mercury on top 102 to 100 as San Antonio could not score again. The two teams play again Saturday night at Phoenix in the best of three series, game time 7 p.m. eastern.

The WNBA Eastern Conference Finals begin tomorrow night at 8 p.m. from Indiana as the Detroit Shock take on the Fever.

Catch both games on ESPN and WNBA radio.

Is The U.S. Army Covering Up The Murder Of PFC. LaVena Johnson?

On July 19, 2005, nineteen year old U.S. Army Private First Class LaVena Johnson (above) died near the city of Balad in Iraq.

The Army ruled her death a suicide. Even though as her father Dr. John Johnson of Florissant, Missouri points out, LaVena's teeth were loose, she had a busted lip and a blood trail was found outside her tent. And a fire may have been set at her tent.

Also LaVena according to the Army died of a gunshot wound to the head. Subsequent residue tests revealed there were no indications she fired a weapon. As well even though the Army declared PFC. Johnson's death a suicide, the Army could not produce any evidence of suicidal indicators on her record. The Army has not re-opened the investigation into PFC. Johnson's death.

Also it appears 'mainstream' media has little or no interest in the death of LaVena Johnson, as it did in the death of ex-NFL football player and U.S. Army soldier Pat Tillman. An internet search looking for information about PFC. Johnson listed articles by bloggers and one result from Randi Rhodes of Air America radio.

LaVena's Father Dr. Johnson continues to speak on behalf of his fallen daughter in hopes of getting the Army to re-open the official investigation of her death. There is an online petition hoping to compel the Army to re-open the case as well. If you would like to help force the U.S. Army to re-investigate the death of PFC. LaVena Johnson please visit The PFC. LaVena Johnson Petition for information.

One Of My Favorite Things...I Love Orchids!

I think I love orchids so much because if you line ten orchids in a row they look so different that you might wonder if they are all orchids. And yet they are. That to me is like the human race, we can look so different and yet we are all human. I think we tend to forget that because a long time ago some europeans decided to invent races of people. Of course the only reason to say that there are races of people instead of just one race is to be able to label one race superior and another inferior.

So maybe we all should learn from orchids, as different as they appear, they are all orchids. And how crazy would it sound to say a white orchid was superior to a brown orchid, just because of its color.

A Moment Of Reflection...

Above is a picture of hurricane Katrina as the outer bands made landfall. When this photo was taken no one knew the devastation that was to follow in Katrina's wake.

One of the troubling things about this is it was not the first time African Americans were left in the lurch following a natural disaster. In what is referred to as The Great Mississippi flood of 1927, almost the identical thing happened. As the Mississippi River flooded it's banks in 1927, Whites evacuated and the mostly poor African Americans who lived in the area were left behind.

As with Katrina, huge numbers of African Americans were moved into "refugee" camps, where the suffering was as it was in the aftermath of Katrina. The person in charge of rescue and relief efforts was a man who would later become President of The United States, Herbert Hoover. At the time the press presented Hoover as a hero for the handling of relief efforts with regard to African Americans. It was after his election that reports of the true suffering emerged. It seems that Mr Hoover conspired to keep the real story of the devastation of the African American population quiet by making promises to make changes for African Americans. He didn't keep those promises.

So we see that African Americans being left to suffer during times of natural disaster is not unique to hurricane Katrina. And the media painting a distorted picture of the disaster and the suffering is nothing new either. That's the trouble with history, as soon as you forget it, it repeats itself.

Let's not Forget hurricane Katrina, let's not forget the suffering, otherwise...

Fond Memories...

Have you noticed that during the time when you are falling in love, certain things that you are introduced to always have a special place in your heart. Sometimes it's a food, a place, a particular time of night or even hand lotion. The first time I really (really) fell in love, the person I was in love with used Neutrogena Hand Cream. I began to use it too. And to this day every time I use it and smell the fragrance, it takes me back to one of the best times in my life. (sigh)

Micheal Vick Found Who?

Yesterday during a speech after pleading guilty in a Virginia Federal court to charges related to dog fighting, former Atlanta Falcon Quarterback Michael Vick aka Ron Mexico said that he'd found Jesus. What? Jesus? Well that's fine, I wish Michael luck with his new found Savior. But what I hope Michael found was some common sense as well. Common sense would have kept him out of this in the first place.

Why would a young man with potential earnings of more than 150 million dollars engage in a trifling activity like dog fighting? No common sense. And who was Michael hanging around with? So none of his "friends" said hey wait a minute Mike, maybe you shouldn't be involved in this, since you have so much to lose. Did his mother know? His dad is in the media now saying among other things that he warned his son to stop dog fighting. Wait a minute, Michael's dad says he warned him? Maybe he should have done a bit more than warn him. Maybe he should have said the dog fighting thing is over, done, forget about it. He should have said son you have too much to lose. But apparently he didn't (maybe because Michael hadn't coughed up the money he was asking for), and now it appears that all has been lost.

Anyway, it looks like instead of living the life of a millionaire, Michael Vick is probably going to jail. He may play football again or he may not. In the interim, Mr. Vick will be living the life of an inmate. And it all could so easily have been avoided.

And now that I think about it, it's a good thing that Michael Vick found Jesus, he's going to need Him in prison.

Mitt, I Have A Question...

A few weeks ago I watched an episode of PBS's Frontline about Mormonism. I didn't know much about Mormonism other than the headquarters of the church is in Utah and that The Mormons had at some point been polygamists.

As I watched I was really interested to find out the history of Mormonism. I learned about the founder of Mormonism Joseph Smith, Jr. and of his Revelations. Also I saw how the Mormons had been attacked in the early years of the religion.

But what really struck me was a segment about Blacks and Mormonism. During this part I was disturbed to find out the Mormon Church taught some despicable things about Black people. The following is from a text quoting then Mormon President Brigham Young;

"Why are so many of the inhabitants of the earth cursed with a skin of blackness? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the holy priesthood, and the law of God. They will go down to death. And when all the rest of the children have received their blessings in the holy priesthood, then that curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will then come up and possess the priesthood, and receive all the blessings which we now are entitled to."

Later during the 1960's African American Civil Rights movement, Hugh B. Brown a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement regarding Blacks and the church that read in part;

"In revelations received by the first prophet of the Church in this dispensation, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the Lord made it clear that it is "not right that any man should be in bondage one to another." These words were spoken prior to the Civil War. From these and other revelations have sprung the Church's deep and historic concern with man's free agency and our commitment to the sacred principles of the Constitution.

It follows, therefore, that we believe the Negro, as well as those of other races, should have his full Constitutional privileges as a member of society, and we hope that members of the Church everywhere will do their part as citizens to see that these rights are held inviolate. Each citizen must have equal opportunities and protection under the law with reference to civil rights.
However, matters of faith, conscience, and theology are not within the purview of the civil law. The first amendment to the Constitution specifically provides that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

The position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints affecting those of the Negro race who choose to join the Church falls wholly within the category of religion. It has no bearing upon matters of civil rights. In no case or degree does it deny to the Negro his full privileges as a citizen of the nation."

Then on June 8, 1978 Mormon President Spencer W. Kimball issued a statement that read in part;

"He has heard our prayers, and by revelation has confirmed that the long-promised day has come when every faithful, worthy man in the Church may receive the holy priesthood, with power to exercise its divine authority, and enjoy with his loved ones every blessing that flows therefrom, including the blessings of the temple. Accordingly, all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color. Priesthood leaders are instructed to follow the policy of carefully interviewing all candidates for ordination to either the Aaronic or the Melchizedek Priesthood to insure that they meet the established standards for worthiness."

So, it seems that the Mormon Church held policies which denied full membership of Blacks for most of its history until Spencer Kimball had a Revelation which gave Black people the opportunity for Priesthood. This denial of rights or discrimination against Blacks is not exclusive to Mormonism. As most of us know many White Christians used the Bible to justify Slavery as well as Jim Crow laws. But I don't think that because the Mormons were not alone in having doctrine which excluded Blacks that this doctrine should not be a legitimate concern to African Americans with regard to the Presidential aspirations of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

So, My question to Mr Romney: How do you feel about the Mormon Church's pre-June 8, 1978 doctrine excluding Blacks from becoming Mormon Priests and therefore denying them according to Mormon faith a chance at going to Heaven? Also, as someone who was a Mormon during this time of discrimination, how did you feel during that time about the doctrine and did you speak for or against it?

I have sent Mr. Romney an e-mail asking those questions. I'll post his response, if I get one.

This Is A Funny (Pathetic) Story....

I heard about this and thought no way. There is no way the Attorney General for the State of California is moving out of his current home in Downtown Oakland, California because there is too much crime in his neighborhood? Well I was wrong. That is exactly why California Attorney General (and former Oakland Mayor) Jerry Brown is moving. He and his wife are moving to the Oakland Hills. I suppose there was a time when one would think that having the states number one law enforcement official living on your block would mean you'd be pretty safe and secure. Well that's apparently not the case in Jerry Browns world. Read more below.

Brown mulls run for governor in 2010
Attorney general says state's biggest problem is global warming.
By Andy Furillo - Bee Capitol Bureau

Riding high on a global warming action plan he wants to take statewide, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said Wednesday he's thinking about running for governor when the job opens up again in 2010.

"The thought has certainly crossed my mind, but I haven't really come to any conclusion," Brown said over coffee in a meeting with The Bee's Capitol Bureau staff.

Meanwhile, Brown said, he's moving. He and his wife are in escrow on a house in the Oakland hills, he said, above the flats near downtown where they live in a one-room loft. Helping prompt the move: Ten homicides within five blocks of his residence since he's lived there.

"Some people would feel it's a little dangerous," he said of his current neighborhood.

Listed as perhaps the top Democratic gubernatorial prospect in two polls, Brown said, "I take note of that, but not with any great interest." The door is "open" to him for a possible run, he said, but "I'm not even going to think about it for the next year."

Why I Decided To Blog

I've thought about blogging for quite some time. But for some reason I never took the step. I just kept putting the thought aside. Then over the last several months I began to read more blogs. I read them almost every day and over time those blogs inspired me.

Blogs like What About Our Daughters and Why Black Women Are Angry. Those particular blogs really impressed me. I have been continually amazed at What About Our Daughters has been able to do, by alerting all of us who read the blog to important issues. But I've been even more amazed at the accomplishments made. Just recently after derogatory comments by a supposed writer at XXL magazine's website about the woman who was brutally attacked at Dunbar village, What About Our Daughters contacted sponsors and alerted them. The result was several pulling their advertising!

The thing I really like about Why Black Women Are Angry are the words of inspiration. Like a post reminding us all not to give up no matter how bad things get.

I was also inspired by blogs such as Lisa C Writes, Home Girl and Los Angelista's Guide To The Pursuit Of Happiness. I enjoy reading their thoughts on various subjects. Like a post from Los Angelistia's Guide To Happiness about her experience standing in line at a post office. Or the braveness of the blogger TranGriot to post about her experiences as a Transgendered woman.

All in all these blogs and others have added to my life in very real ways. A while back when What About Our Daughters was protesting BET's Hot Ghetto Mess aka We Got To Do Better, for the first time in my life I wrote my Congressperson asking her to support ala cart cable. (Back when I had cable)

I'm not sure if anyone will actually even read my blog and if anyone does I certainly don't expect to inspire people the way other bloggers do on a daily basis. But I hope that my words will at least, sometimes, cause a few people to think.

There Are Thousands Of Stories Like This Out There That We Never See...

Student has double graduation; Continues studies at Morehouse College

By Naji Tobias, The Sun

David Wallace, joined by Palm Beach Community College Provost Dr. Beverly Robinson, left, and his mother, Samantha Wallace, received his high school diploma and a college degree simultaneously.INI/Naji Tobias

BELLE GLADE — David Wallace graduated from college on May 18. He graduated from high school 10 days later.

Mr. Wallace, joining other Glades Central students who also accomplished the strange feat, had enrolled in a dual course program at the high school and at Palm Beach Community College.

Mr. Wallace gladly accepted an Associate of Arts degree from Palm Beach Community College before he ever had a chance to look at his high school diploma.

He had been working at this since his sophomore year of high school.

Mr. Wallace has moved on to Morehouse College in Atlanta, as of Aug. 13. He will be majoring in Biology and his ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician treating children in third-world countries.

Mr. Wallace said he would like to explore South America to learn about its heritage and culture. That way, he would be as effective as possible in bringing hope to the children of South America.

“I know I have a passion to work with kids,” he said. “Giving them my undivided attention, as well as medical care, will ultimately benefit them in the future and by doing that, I could say that I have accomplished my goal in life.”

But, at this point in his life, Mr. Wallace credits his family n namely his mother, Samantha Wallace and grandmother, Mildred Torrence n for his success.

In March 2006, Ms. Torrence suffered a severe stroke and was told that she had a month to live, according to David’s mother. Ms. Torrence was told by doctors, after being diagnosed, that she would remain in a comatose state, which means that her brain would have very little activity -- no movement.

But in August of that year, Ms. Torrence began speaking.

Mr. Wallace recalls what his grandmother told him on that fateful day.

“My grandmother told me to make her proud when she was able to speak again,” said Mr. Wallace. Ms. Torrence would only live until September.

Since then however, Mr. Wallace was determined to earn his high school diploma and associate’s degree.

“Before my mother passed,” said Mrs. Wallace, “David committed to her that he would graduate from Palm Beach Community College and I strongly felt that it was his grandmother’s dying wish. He made that happen.”

Right now, Mr. Wallace is in the pre-planning stages with PBCC officials to map out a plan to attend medical school, after he graduates from Morehouse College.

A National Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society student, Mr. Wallace is looking forward to earning his degree.

“I am truly proud of David and all of his accomplishments,” said Ms. Wallace. “I constantly tell him that great things are expected of great people and as long as he has a spiritual connection with God, then his achievements are limitless. There’s nothing he won’t be able to do.”
