There are bloggers who do copious research and bloggers who bare their souls. Those I think are the bloggers who are the definition of blogging. I like to comment when I see that someone has done a lot of work either literally or emotionally for a post. I am continually amazed at the depth of thought that bloggers put into their blogs.
I sometimes read a post and it's so thought provoking that I have to come back hours or a day later to comment. Some posts require by their excellence a certain level of thought be put into the comments.
On some blogs the comments section is a forum and a community of it's own. Some comments sections are almost a clique. I feel that everyone knows each other, if only from commenting, and am too intimidated to leave a comment.
There is only one thing I don't like about commenting. That is when I put a lot of thought into a comment and the blogger doesn't respond. I really hate that. I know that some comments are more rhetorical and don't really require any sort of feedback. But I'm talking about the comments that are communicative, one's that I may even pose a question or offer a theory regarding the post. So a non-response sometimes feels like the blogger is saying your comment made no sense or does not matter. Lately though I have been trying to notice if the blogger just generally does not respond and find that some bloggers for what ever reason don't comment on their own blog. My unrequited comments still hurt my feelings though (sniff sniff), but I'll be okay.
I've only had one blogger be rude and she was really young and her rudeness was more sarcasm. I think she was trying to impress her usual commenters. Anyway once was all it took, I haven't been back to her blog.
I have only recently begun to post comments that are in opposition to the post. I use to just disagree in silence, but on re-thinking, I realized that sometimes disagreeing is apart of the blogging process. And some of the most enjoyable comments I've read have been in opposition of the bloggers point of view. if I do happen to leave a comment that disagrees, I try to be as positive as possible in the process. Sometimes it's informative to disagree. I've had bloggers respond to my comment and compel me to see a different point of view.
Commenting or reading comments is also a great way of finding interesting blogs. If someone leaves a comment that stands out I generally check their blog and more times than not I find an interesting blog. Which has also made me aware that when I'm out in the blogisphere making comments that others are doing the same, so I have to represent my blog well by leaving coherent comments (with as few typos and misspellings as possible).
All in all commenting is a activity in and of itself. I think one could occupy one's self for endless hours commenting. And I've noticed that there are a lot of people who don't have blogs that comment. So it seems that people other than me really enjoy the process.
All I can really hope for is that a comment or two of mine have had a positive effect on a blogger or someone else reading it. I know that I have read quite a few comments from others that have had a positive effect on me.

this is a great post! i mean, you said it all regarding comments on blogs. i must admit i have been hesitant about commenting in my own comments to others b/c i wasn't sure if anyone was coming back for more....
Hi Browngirl,
(lol) Well I always come back to your blog when I comment, to see if you comment and to see the other comments too.
Thanks!
This post I agree with. It's always nice to know that someone is reading your blog, especially if you put in the hours and take the time to do well-researched, logically thought out posts.
The blogs I link to that I regularly read I like posting comments to, and its cool when those bloggers reciprocate.
The other cool thing ablot blogging it that you do get to know the other bloggers, talk to them off the Net and if you're fortunate, you make a friend in the process as well.
Unless the comment is a personal attack or explicitly nasty, I will post comments critical of my opinions as well. Personally I don't want an 'amen corner' and like to hear views contrary to my own.
Hi Monica,
I agree, when you work hard on a post getting comments is really nice.
I've only had one post where someone left a really negative comment. That was my post about Marion Jones. But it wasn't nasty, they just didn't see it my way.
Thanks
i had never thought of responding to a comment that way (in the comments section). it would not have occurred to me that people would/might come back to see if there was a response. very novel idea.
i found your blog in a list of people who listed joan armatrading in favorite music. she's one of my favorites.
Hi Cathleen,
I love Joan. I have been a fan for years. My favorite song is Willow.
I think it depends on the type of comment. Usually though I will go back and I think a lot of people do. It's fun.
Thanks for stopping by!
Very well put, you are absolutely right, point taken, post was very entertaining and insightful, excellent work, I...umh shall be back!
Great post! I like commenting and getting comments. Yes, I always return to see what the bloggers and others say to my comments.
As far as posting disagreeing comments, that's tricky. Some bloggers really don't like it. I try really hard to not be negative or combative. Some blogs are meant for debates or the blogger is very open minded. But blog etiquette says you shouldn't rain on someones mood. I mean don't be picky or too serious with a post meant to be funny. It all depends on the blog tone, I guess.
I look forward to your comments alays.
Alpha,
Thanks. And thanks for stopping by!
Jackie,
You're right, it is tricky. Especially if it's a blog you have not visited often.
And I agree that getting comments is great. If I've had a long day at work it's great to get home and find comments on my blog.
I love getting comments from you too. You always make insightful comments!.
Ms Deux, Jackie,
Sometimes the insightful comments case me to think about an inssue in a new direction that inspires another blog posting
Monica,
That happens a lot. I have a blogging note book so when that happens I write the topic down for future use.
Insightful post!
I also feel intimidated to comment if the commentators seem like "regulars" and i'm crashing in. lol
Other worries I have on comments, if I may, is whether I make one commentator feel great and another not so great. (i'm a worry wart)
Another is if there is a blog etiquette that I don't know about. Like sometimes I may go to a blog and in the comment section ask if folks could see a post of mine. It doesn't feel right, but there is no rule. I dunno. (I don't do it so often, only when I REALLY need feedback on an important topic)
Miriram,
I've done that a few times, but only with bloggers I have built a repore with. I don't think most people mind though.
You can always feel free to do that on my blog.
Such good points on this. I always come back to see if a blogger has responded to my comment. It's like a virtual conversation. And I try to always respond to the comments on my own...sometimes I'm a little slow though depending on what's going on here. It might take me a day to do so.
Hi Liz,
The interaction on your blog between you and your readers is amazing. I remember your post a while ago when you challanged your readers to stop 'lurking' and to comment. And since then the comments on your blog have been amazing. And one of the things I enjoy the most is that you do respond and very thoughfully.
early New Years '08 resolution.
Spell check ;)
Well peeps, when the voting starts for the 2007 Weblog Awards on November 1, this blog is nominated in the Best New Blog category.
So if you appreciate what you see here, show Ms. Deux some love when the voting starts.
Monica,
Thanks! (smile)
Initially, I did not respond to comments, but I noticed you and Homegirl responding, and it made sense. I knew how much I enjoyed reading your feedback to my posts -so I started trying to offer feedback when people comment. Thanks! And you definitely have my vote!
Lisa,
Getting and responding to comments are the best things about blogging to me. I have seen blogs that don't even allow comments, how weird is that?
Thanks
