If you have been visiting this blog for a while you know I love words. As much as I love words I really love tricky words, like heteronyms.
Heteronyms are especially interesting since they are also known as heterophones but even though they have the same spelling and different meanings they are not homophones because they have different pronunciations.
Don't you just love this stuff!
Anyway I ran into twenty great examples of heteronyms at the blog Traces of a Stream and I thought I would share.
Here they are...
- The bandage was wound around the wound.
- The farm was used to produce produce.
- The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
- We must polish the Polish furniture.
- He could lead if he would get the lead out.
- The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
- Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present .
- A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
- When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
- I did not object to the object.
- The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
- There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
- They were too close to the door to close it.
- The buck does funny things when the does are present.
- A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
- To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
- The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
- Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
- I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
- How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Can you think of any other examples? Are some of the examples above really homophones?

Great examples... I love words too!
One thing though, most of the examples aren't homophones, they're homographs.
Homophones can be spelled differently, but are always pronounced the same.
(Wow, I can't believe I actually remembered that)
Hi SheCodes,
I didn't say they were homographs, I said that they were heteronyms or heterophones.
In fact in the second paragraph I say that they are not homophones.
The examples are spelled the same but pronounced differently.
So aren't we saying the same thing?
I love this kind of stuff!
WTM,
They are fun. I'm always on the look out for them!
